Nebula is an original project whose inspiration comes from a wide spectrum of music – from microtonal folk, classical music of the Middle East and central Asia to modern jazz, blues, classical European music and rock/electronic fusion. The aim is not to join any concrete genre or style, to always think outside the box, as everything changes in time. The core of the group are Alice Bauer (voice, keyboard, percussion) and Miroslav Fiedler (guitars, voice, percussion) and can expand to a full-rhythm section or and perform with various guests on given occasions. Nebula means a place of formation and destruction to us, a space where the non-concrete transforms into the concrete, small elements change into mass and mass regroups into new shapes. Our Nebula came into being in the fall of 2023 and its elements merge and transform all the time. It holds together thanks to an incessant desire to find musical areas that we have not explored yet.
Alice Bauer is a jazz singer and a founding member of the prominent Czech acappella group Skety who have won many international prizes, for example in Aarhus (Denmark), Tampere (Finland), Taipei (Taiwan) and Graz (Austria). She has recorded four albums with this group in 2015, 2017, 2020, and in 2024. Outside of her band Nebula whose work is centered mostly around original pieces, Alice is a member of the bebop group Bohemia After Dark and an experimental band Hlaskontrabas Oktet (four voices, four double-basses), with whom she has recorded a quite unique album in 2024. Alice is a member of the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra performing 1920’s jazz. She also works with a swing close harmony vocal trio Hot Sisters (the Lamoš sisters) and performs modern classical pieces with the Berg Orchestra as a guest performer. She has recorded her brother Varhan Bauer’s quasi-baroque soprano piece for Miloš Forman’s film Goya’s Ghosts. Alice has studied jazz vocals at the Conservatory of Jaroslav Ježek, piano with Jan Páleníček and English and American studies and general linguistics and phonetics at the Philosophical Faculty in Prague. She has graduated from the specialized jazz program at the Conservatory of J.Ježek in 2024, her final thesis being on the “Persian Influences in the Music of Mahan Mirarab” – a work describing the mixing of microtonal elements into jazz. She has spent the past few years studying Middle-Eastern music and other microtonal systems. She also performs at workshops and jams on this topic, organized by modalmusic.cz, an association for modal music from around the globe. Alice believes that music can change the way people think and that they can become better as a result of making it. English is her second mother tongue.
Miroslav Fiedler has graduated in jazz guitar studies under the guidance of Jaroslav Šindler and also in classical guitar studies supervised by Milan Tesař. After his studies, he attended private lessons with Zdeněk Dvořák, has participated in many workshops in Mikulov, Brno, Leszno and Prague. He organised several solo guitar recitals and released a CD inspired by his travels in India. He was a member of the ska-band Basta Fidel for some time. As for the jazz scene, he cooperated with Ondřej Kabrna, Vít Fiala, Vít Švec, Adéla Zejfatová, Antonín Šturma, Sophia Lamoš, Petra Vlková etc. He writes his own compositions and songs, makes arrangements and occasionaly he's able to serve as a singer. Apart form the Nebula project which he co-leads with Alice Bauer, he performa with the Rejbele band and sometimes also with Divá Baara. His musical dream is to have a permanent group of musicians playing their own music.
